||This week in the United States a bunch of people shot and killed each other for no good reason.|
||Sadly, this is not currently that unusual, but some of the examples this week were still remarkable in their appallingness:|
||"Heavy on My Heart"
||- a well-loved cafeteria-worker shot in his car in front of his girlfriend and their child after being stopped by police for a broken taillight;|
||Rebel and a Basketcase
||- several police officers shot by a sniper while they were accompanying a peaceful protest against the first thing (and many other similar incidents);|
||"The Eyes of the Wolf"
||- the previous sniper cornered and eventually simply killed in place by police using a bomb attached to a robot.|
||We are still in the early years of "social media", and thus the immediacy with which we are collectively aware of these horrifying things still seems like another thing in itself.|
||But here is the fundamental underlying truth:|
||Human society is predicated on the stipulation that every human has a right to live.|
||"Am Ende des Sommers"
||All social mechanism is ultimately in service of the goal of allowing people to collectively exercise this individual right without each requiring a separate planet in order to do so without interfering with each other.|
||"Just Let It"
||Just Let It / The Fall
||The people who were killed this week deserve to be alive with exactly as much moral force as the people who are still alive.|
||"Hammer Of The Gods"
||The people who were killed under less scrutiny in other weeks, and other places, have the same right to still be alive.|
||Trick or Treat
||"Inle' (The Black Rabbit of Death)"
||Rabbits' Hill Pt.2
||The people killed in wars, and in "accidents", and in natural disasters for which they were systemically unprepared, deserve to be alive.|
||Mono No Aware
||There have been so many recent examples, in this country, of black people killed by police, that protestors have taken up "Black Lives Matter" as a banner.|
||As a society, we must be mortified, all of us, that it has come to this, that anybody should feel like we must be collectively reminded of the individual rights of a whole group of people.|
||"All the Rage"
||We are at the point of social progress where we can offer no excuse for systemic social inequality.|
||We know this cannot be. Maybe we always did, but it's now now, and we definitely do now.|
||"Love & Desire"
||We know now that it is literally unconscionable for individual human beings to have their individual right to live unilaterally violated.|
||"CLOUD - Escaping 140"
||Lost Files Vol. 2
||We cannot pretend that we don't, or that this simple truth is somehow more complicated.|
||And we especially can't pretend that this particular group of people has not historically had their rights in this country systemically and definitively violated.|
||The Naked And Famous
||We cannot pretend we don't know why anybody should feel like the worth of Black Lives, in particular, must be explicitly asserted.|
||The Last Royals
||And so while it is also true, of course, that All Lives Matter, it is one of the most desperate terriblenesses of our current situation that this basic statement of moral grounding has itself become a politicized slogan.|
||Responding to "Black Lives Matter" with "All Lives Matter" is a basic sociopathic failure of empathy.|
||"Under The Cover"
||Deaths do not produce a moral scoreboard. You cannot win by killing, only lose.|
||"Discover The Lost"
||Discover The Lost
||Nothing you do can correct a killing or diminish the inherent value of the life lost.|
||Killing people is not a conflict-resolution method.|
||"Linen Garden, Pt. 1 (feat. Hammock)"
||Slow Meadow (Deluxe Edition)
||KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT A CONFLICT-RESOLUTION METHOD.|
||"Battle of Arcane Might"
||In a society, killing individuals only ever escalates the collective conflict.|
||"Skin and Bones"
||Every black person shot by police makes the next horrifying death more likely.|
||"Breaking and Shaking"
||Breaking and Shaking
||Every police officer shot in vengeance makes the next encounter more dangerous.|
||Bright Light Bright Light
||"Symmetry of Two Hearts (feat. Elton John)"
||KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT A CONFLICT-RESOLUTION METHOD.|
||ARMING PEOPLE TO RESPOND TO INEVITABLE AND ROUTINE CONFLICT WITH SIMPLIFIED KILLING IS NOT VIABLE OR ACCEPTABLE.|
||"Higher Waters - VIP"
||Our Spaces: Reworks
||We probably do need police.|
||In an armed nation we probably do need armed police.|
||(Fucking hell, history, we had so many guns that we just called it "armed", like this nihilism is part of our bodies.)|
||"Paz Con Cadenas"
||Paz Con Cadenas
||But for most of the things we curently try to solve with armed police, what we really need first is Community Support.|
||This is a perfectly good use of government: hiring, training and paying people to go out into our shared environment and actively facilitate its operation.|
||Some places and times need more of this than others. But this is not a role that should be performed as a series of acts of armed coercion.|
||"Battle at Elessar"
||The primary dynamic must not be law enforcement.|
||Night Hides the World
||We have laws to formalize what it takes to coexist, to say how we want to be. They are our laws.|
||Sometimes we make them wrong, and they must be corrected.|
||Human Story 3
||Sometimes we make bad laws in fear, and must find the love with which to undo them again.|
||Sometimes, more subtly, we realize over time that laws have systemically unjust consequences, and we must find more powerful love with which to solve for greater complexity.|
||But even when the laws are simple, we sometimes need help following them.|
||It's a big system. The patterns of consequence from microbehavior to macroeconomics can be non-obvious.|
||No Light, No Tunnel
||Sometimes it helps to have a person stand there and hold up a sign to remind people of a thing as pathetically obvious as "Don't drive your car into children crossing a street to go to school."|
||"Olet Mun Kaikuluotain"
||Not because anybody disagrees, but because the same system that gets children to school also tries to get harried communters to their jobs on time, and ambulances to early-morning heart-attack victims, and it's hard for everybody to keep all the functions in mind at once.|
||"Let's Do Something Crazy"
||It makes no sense to weaponize this. The message is not "If you hit these kids, I will kill you with a gun.", it's "Hey, slow down and do your part to make sure these kids get to school safely."|
||Nina Las Vegas
||We are in this together. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER.|
||"Time After Time"
||Koln / Time After Time
||And when this system threatens to break down, even with help, the main thing we need is to be reminded of our humanity and thus of our power.|
||"Friends and Enemies"
||Or, when our humanity has been damaged, to have help restoring it.|
||"Tsunami - Radio Edit"
||We are not going to fix broken windows by shooting at them. A street with broken windows needs glass cutters and carpenters, not an occupying army. |
||Jon Henrik Fjällgren
||"Vår framtid - Mijjen båetije biejjieh"
||It may also need better schools, or better jobs, or cleaner water.|
||"Little Bit Of Love"
||Little Bit Of Love +2
||They probably like having clear shields between them and the cold just as much as you do. Something you aren't seeing makes it more complicated here.|
||And when the system breaks too badly for helpers to fix it just by helping, the next resort has to be not killing people but Witness. Not less humanity but more.|
||And maybe this is how these last few horrible events, whose horribleness at the moment seems magnified by the cameras, can actually turn out to have been progress.|
||"Alla har ont nånstans"
||Instead of saying "I may kill you with this gun", witnessing allows us to say "Everybody is watching you, this is being recorded. Everybody is poised to fall in love with you if you can rise above your fear in this moment."|
||"A Reason Why"
||Instead of demanding body cameras on our armed police, we should resist putting guns on our witnesses.|
||Nothing / Can't Stop / Bleed
||Instead of issuing more gun permits to civilians, so that more people are ready to kill each other to avoid having to solve their problems, we should make it easier to turn on a camera and help the scene before you see itself in the eyes of the world. The drones and robots should have cameras, not arms.|
||"Min tur nu"
||We will never get better through a series of "I may kill you in a second no matter what you do" panics.|
||"El último Deshielo"
||Killing people is not a conflict-resolution method. The dead can atone for nothing.|
||From States Away
||"Fight or Flight"
||The resource we have is not death, it's life. Only the living may improve. Only the living can help.|
||Most dangerously, of course, the living can fear. But even more powerfully, the living can love.|
||A Little More - EP
||Let love overcome your fear. To those in need, offer love, not fear. Towards those trapped for a moment, or a lifetime, in fear: brandish love, not more fear.|
||Even when you can bear to talk about nothing but overwhelming pain, offer music.|
