||I don't really know how Big Country ever became slightly popular despite the crushing weight of Stuart Adamson's honesty,|

||CARROTS and STiCKS
||but then, I don't actually know why anything becomes popular or doesn't, basically, and if somebody were going to know, it's as likely to be me as anybody.|
||It can't help that it's not usually what I want to know,|
||but the deeper problem, I think, is that if I had a method for predicting or explaining hits, it couldn't reasonably rely on me listening to songs personally,|
||and if it worked and weren't based on listening, I'd probably end up spending my time not-listening along with it,|

||and if I wanted to spend my time not listening to music, I'd be somebody else.|

||If you spend your present betting on the future,|

||I hear a song I don't know and didn't expect and feel exhilarated,|
||and the exhilaration is self-contained, or mostly.|
||Or that's not entirely true, I guess, as there's an element of my exhilaration that is based on imagining the individual song as an examplar of songs,|
||and myself as a representative human listener,|
||MY FIRST STORY
||"King & Ashley"
||and thus believing in the possibility of music as a medium of human connection,|
||and when I believe this I definitely believe it doesn't operate solely by connecting each single song to a single listener.|
||I play these Japanese songs and imagine both that they are strange and unknown to the air around me, and that there is another air that they fill.|

||You look ridiculous, and the question is only whether the strange color of your skin is because you're rotting or molting or about to be in an amazing and ridiculous video or something else. Or maybe that's not the only question. I don't know who originally thought this song was a good idea, and I can easily imagine myself trying to talk them out of it. Surely we could have predicted how badly this would go. But my arguments against prediction aren't based on confidence. It won't all necessarily work out. But effort and confidence are both aspirationally self-fulfilling, and and if you let your actions model your future as chance, all of the paths are low.|
